SURAKARTA – The Public Health Study Program, Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK), Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), continues its commitment to promoting health literacy through its DIALOKESMAS Podcast on Spotify. In the latest episode, the podcast features Ners. Sugiharto, MAN., Ph.D., a lecturer in the UMS Nursing Study Program and a diabetes expert, to discuss common concerns regarding diabetes management during the fasting month.
Focusing on physical activity during fasting and misconceptions surrounding diabetes, the episode aims to provide evidence-based health information that helps the public observe fasting safely while maintaining optimal health.
During the discussion, Sugiharto explained that people living with diabetes can generally continue exercising while fasting, provided that their blood glucose levels are well controlled and the intensity of exercise is adjusted to their individual health condition. He emphasized that regular physical activity remains an important part of diabetes management, as it helps regulate blood glucose, improves insulin sensitivity, and maintains overall physical fitness.
However, he noted that timing is crucial when exercising during Ramadan. According to Sugiharto, the safest time for physical activity is shortly before breaking the fast or one to two hours after iftar, when the body has regained energy and hydration. Conversely, vigorous exercise during the daytime should be avoided, as it may increase the risk of dehydration and hypoglycemia, particularly for individuals taking glucose-lowering medications or insulin.
The episode also addressed the widespread belief that fasting can cure diabetes. Sugiharto clarified that this claim is a myth rather than a medical fact. He explained that there is currently no scientific evidence showing that fasting can permanently cure diabetes.
Nevertheless, fasting, when combined with a balanced diet, appropriate medication adjustments, and regular blood glucose monitoring, can contribute to better glycemic control, improved insulin sensitivity, and enhanced metabolic health—especially for individuals with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, fasting should be viewed as part of a healthy lifestyle and comprehensive diabetes management, rather than as a cure for the disease.
Sugiharto also encouraged individuals with diabetes to consult healthcare professionals before deciding to fast, particularly those with uncontrolled blood glucose levels, diabetes-related complications, or other high-risk medical conditions. Personalized medical advice is essential to ensure that fasting can be observed safely and without compromising health.
