Public Health UMS Student Wins Silver Medal at Japan Design, Idea, & Invention Expo with Innovative Migrant Worker Protection Platform

SURAKARTA – A student from the Public Health Study Program, Faculty of Health Sciences (FIK), Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), has once again brought international recognition to the university. Afnan Zain Muzakki and his multidisciplinary team were awarded the Silver Medal at the Japan Design, Idea, & Invention Expo (JDIE) 2026, an international innovation competition held in Japan.

The team consisted of Afnan Zain Muzakki (Public Health, UMS), Syaban Al Musyaffa Ibnu Ahmad (Accounting, UMS), Yuanda Eka Saputra (Informatics Education, UMS), Fauzan Muhammad Ihsan (Management, UMS), and Ahmad Dzaky Mubarok (Arabic Language Education, UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta). Their achievement highlights the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in developing innovative solutions to address global challenges.

At the competition, the team presented SafeTKI, an innovative digital platform powered by Blockchain and Smart Contract technologies, designed to provide an integrated cross-border protection system for Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI). The platform aims to enhance transparency, security, and accountability throughout the migrant worker journey—from recruitment and placement to employment abroad.

By leveraging blockchain technology, SafeTKI ensures that critical records are securely stored in a transparent and tamper-resistant system. Meanwhile, smart contracts automate the execution of employment agreements based on predefined terms, helping minimize contract violations, improve compliance, and strengthen legal protection for migrant workers. The platform also facilitates better coordination among stakeholders involved in migrant worker management, creating a more integrated and reliable protection system.

Receiving the Silver Medal at JDIE 2026 demonstrates the team’s ability to combine technological innovation with social impact. SafeTKI addresses one of Indonesia’s pressing challenges by proposing a digital solution that promotes safer migration, protects workers’ rights, and supports more efficient governance through emerging technologies.

This international recognition also reflects the Public Health Study Program UMS’s commitment to fostering innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and global engagement among its students. By encouraging students to develop impactful solutions to real-world issues, the program continues to produce graduates who are not only academically accomplished but also capable of contributing to sustainable development and improving community well-being at both the national and international levels.
