Speak up, for clean air and a healthier Solo!

Surakarta, July 4, 2025 — Thirty-six students from the UMS Public Health Study Program conducted legislative advocacy directly with the Surakarta City Council (DPRD). Accompanied by Ms. Dwi Linna Suswardany, S.KM., MPH., along with a team of laboratory technicians and practical assistants, they voiced the results of an in-depth study on Smoke-Free Areas (KTR) in Surakarta City through eight policy briefs, presented using language designed for council members. They were warmly received by Mr. @herson_rikumahu Herson Rikumahu, S.Kep., from Commission II of the DPRD, who carefully listened to the policy briefs and the content of the eight student groups’ advocacy presentations. Mr. Herson also opened a thought-provoking discussion.

“This discussion broadened students’ insight and stimulated critical thinking,” said Khansa Nabila, outgoing Chairperson of HMP and the advocacy participant from the group with the best presentation.

From analyzing local regulations, mayoral regulations, and other regulations, field observations, stakeholder interviews, carefully preparing policy briefs in stages, to advocacy and discussions with council members—AKK students are trained to become agents of change while still in college!
