Public Health UMS Launches Free Online Short Course on Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine from a Public Health Perspective

SURAKARTA – The Department of Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS), has launched a Free Online Short Course entitled “Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) from a Public Health Perspective: Evidence, Safety, Communication, and Integration.” The program is designed to provide undergraduate students with a broader understanding of the role of traditional, complementary, and integrative medicine within public health systems.

Unlike most TCIM courses that primarily focus on clinical practice, this course adopts a public health perspective. Participants will explore key issues related to TCIM, including who uses TCIM and why, potential risks and safety concerns, how communication influences health-related decision-making, and how health systems respond to and integrate TCIM into healthcare services.

The course also highlights Indonesia’s experience in integrating traditional and complementary medicine into primary healthcare, offering participants valuable insights into policy implementation and healthcare system development.

Open to undergraduate students in Public Health and related disciplines, the course does not require a clinical background. Participants will gain access to six learning modules, short video lectures, reading materials, interactive quizzes, and a certificate of completion. The program is delivered through a flexible asynchronous online learning format, allowing students to study at their own pace.

Registration is open from April 25 to May 30, 2026, while the course will run from June 1 to June 30, 2026. Participants are expected to dedicate approximately two to three hours per week to complete the learning activities.

Through this initiative, the Department of Public Health UMS aims to enhance students’ understanding of evidence-based, safe, and effective TCIM practices while promoting a broader discussion on their integration into healthcare systems. The program reflects UMS’s commitment to providing innovative learning opportunities and addressing emerging public health issues in both national and global contexts.
