Basic Fire Rescue: UMS Public Health Study Program Collaborates with Sukoharjo Fire Department to Train Students

Surakarta, April 29, 2025 – The Public Health (Kesmas) Study Program of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) has once again demonstrated its commitment to improving disaster preparedness capacity for students. On Tuesday, April 29, 2025, the UMS Public Health Study Program in collaboration with the Sukoharjo Regency Fire Department (Damkar) held a Basic Fire Rescue activity that took place in two sessions, namely a theory class and field practice.

The theory class was held at the UMS Public Health Study Program’s Occupational Health and Safety (K3) Laboratory. In this session, Fire Department officers provided material related to the basic principles of fire, types of extinguishers, and initial rescue steps during a fire, especially in residential areas and public spaces.

The practical session was held at the UMS Campus 2 Field. Participants received direct training on the use of Light Fire Extinguishers (APAR), initial handling of fires due to gas leaks, to simulations of extinguishing fires using fire engines. This activity was interactive and full of enthusiasm, because students could be directly involved in each simulation provided.

This activity not only aims to equip students with technical skills in dealing with fires, but also to raise awareness of the importance of a quick and appropriate response in dealing with emergency situations.

The UMS Public Health Study Program hopes that this kind of training can be carried out routinely as part of strengthening the capacity of disaster preparedness among the academic community, as well as supporting field-based application learning.
