Students specializing in Environmental Health from the Public Health Study Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Muhammadiyah University, Surakarta, visited the Health Laboratory & Medical Device Testing Center in Central Java. The student visit was held on Tuesday, December 5 2023 at 08.00-14.00 accompanied by Mrs. Rezania Asyfiradayati, SKM., MPH. as supervisor. The visit was intended for the purpose of learning about measuring ambient air levels. Ambient air nitrogen dioxide test refers to SNI 711-2:2017. This standard is used to determine nitrogen dioxide in ambient air using the Griess-Saltzman method using a spectrophotometer at a wavelength of 550 nm with a concentration range of 4 µg/Nm3 to 500 µg/Nm3 or 0.002 ppm to 5 ppm air. Test the air using an impinger tool. When installing the impinger bottle, it must not be reversed, nor should the hose for the bottle be reversed because the speed of the air flowing in it will also be reversed.
Procedures for testing based on SNI can be carried out as follows:
1. Put 10 mL of Griess-Saltzman adsorbent solution into the adsorbent bottle
2. Arrange the absorbent bottle so that it is protected from rain and direct sunlight
3. Turn on the air suction pump and set the flow rate to 0.4 L/minute, once it is stable, record the initial flow rate and monitor the air flow rate at least once every 15 minutes
4. Take test samples for 1 hour and record the temperature and air pressure
5. After 1 hour, turn off the suction pump
6. Adjust the volume of solution in the absorbent bottle to a certain volume (Vl) and carry out analysis in the field immediately after taking the test sample (maximum 1 hour after taking the test sample).
After carrying out the test, students are taught to calculate and compare based on applicable standards. It is hoped that after carrying out this training, students will be able to apply ambient air tests in the field.
